ORIENTAL CONCEPTS IN GEORGIAN FIGURATIVE SAYINGS

Abstract

Due to its historical location, Georgia has always had relations with neighboring states, with linguistic-cultural relations with Turkey being particularly noteworthy.

Georgian language contains numerous direct Turkish lexical items, as well as Persian-Arabic words that entered through Turkish.

The Georgian language is rich in figurative expressions, which clearly reflect the people's culture, traditions, life experience, relations with neighboring peoples, linguistic contacts and influences.

A large portion of Georgian figurative expressions were created with Oriental-Turkish-Persian-Arabic concepts. We examine expressions with concepts from precisely these languages in the presentation.

Some concepts belong to the most ancient borrowings. Some expressions or phraseology are universal, others have similar semantics or the concept has been modified.

We used Tedo Sakhokia's "Georgian Figurative Expressions" (1979) as empirical material.

In the work we have examined several examples, which we compare with the lexical materials from Shushana Putkaradze's "Our Way of Speaking Georgian" (1993).

aghas shno mogtses =they gave you favor, right, victory: Agha (Turkish-Persian. Ağa) - master, owner, tenant.

alali oplit lukmis chama = Alal to eat a bite with sweat;  to live by honest work, irreproachable existence. Alal (Arab. Persian Helal) - legal).

davtarshi ar utseria=  It is not written in the notebook = it is not a habit, it is not necessary. Davtar-i (Turkish defter) - notebook.

Dovlatze zis = He is sitting on a throne =he is well-off, rich, he lacks nothing. Dovlat (Arab. Duflat, Turk. Dovlat) - victory, domination, wealth, strength.

dunia, dunia khalkhi =Dunya, Dunya people = many, countless, invisible space or people; Dunya (rab. Gunya);

vai shens mters da dushmans= Woe to your enemy and your enemy = may it separate you well, may misfortune befall you. Dushman (Spar. guSman). In this expression, the Georgian-Persian concept is the enemy.

Sipta sheni= Your wealth = God's blessing, you have a good hand, you are generous. Sifta (Arab. Siftah) - initially, in the beginning.

In the report, we will analyze symbolic words according to thematic groups.
