FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE -A EMFATIC VOWEL IN THE SPREECH OF THE FRON VALLEY
Abstract
This article analyzes the phonetic, grammatical, demarcation, and stylistic functions of the -a Empatic Vowel. Before the suffix, the -a suffix serves as a consonant strengthener and at the same time separates the morpheme, while after the suffix, it serves as a demarcation.
The grammatical functions of the -a suffix are identical to those of the literary language and other languages. It contributes to the abundance of allomorphs of the inflectional sign. The -a suffix has a demarcating function if the substantive determiner is postpositional. The -a suffix appears as a closure of the construction.
Two distributives are used with a demarcation function in illustrative examples: bread, food. The -a distributive construction is suppressed in sentences. The syntactic pair of the subject and the indirect object, the subject and the simple object of the object are separated from each other. If the substantive determiner is postpositional, -a appears as a closure of the expansion construction in the sentence, it is separated from the other members, and the content is clear.
Two distributives are used with a demarcation function in illustrative examples: p’urisasa, (bread) , sach’mlisasa (food)...
The -a distributive construction is suppressed in sentences. The syntactic pair of the subject and the indirect object, the subject and the simple object of the object are separated from each other.
In the particle forms of the word "others", -a has a dieremic function, separating morphemes from each other (gzasao, vajsao...). In folk poetry, the -a suffix contributes to the rhythm of the phrase. Illustrative examples confirm the use of the "excessive" -a suffix (sitikasgaena, kirstyakene...)
Words with the -a vowel are accented, intonationally separated. A pause appears after such words. Often the verb is placed in the second intonation unit surrounded by various members. Such sentences are characterized by a calm, unhurried narration.
Changes in the functional characteristics of the -a vowel in the speech of the Fron Valley are a common phenomenon characteristic of the Kartli dialect.
