Abstract

The 19th century witnessed new developments and improvements in the principles of research methodology across various sciences. This also influenced the study of historical disciplines. Rooted in the cosmopolitanism of Romanticism, the idea was established that the past should be thoroughly examined in relation to understanding the present and the future, a notion that was also reflected in the views and publications of the Georgian Tergdaleulebi and the progressive intelligentsia. The writer Anton Purtseladze (1839–1913) closely followed the issues related to the study and research of science and culture, was well acquainted with the methodological problems of historical science in Europe, and sought to analyze questions of Georgian history from this perspective, which was particularly evident in his journalistic works (“David Aslanishvili-Jandieri”, “Iakub Khan and Barataani”, “The Struggle for the Destruction and Unification of Georgia, or Giorgi Saakadze and His Time”, “History of Georgia from Ancient Times to the End of the 10th Century – Works by D. Bakradze”).

This article focuses on Anton Purtseladze’s review of D. Bakradze’s historical work, in which he was among the first to raise the question of how history should be written and according to what principles..
